Time

5-10 min

Materials

  • Blackboard/White Board
  • Chalk/Dry Erase Markers

Directions

Split class into groups and tell them to decide the order within the group. Then they all close their eyes except the first people in each group. Choose a word and write the first letter on the board, checking to make sure they all understand it. Tell them to close their eyes and tell the second people to wake up and give them their letter. Continue until the word is finished. Then they all 'wake up' and write down the word from memory.

This is good for students that only know the letters but not necessarily how to read words. It can be good practice for reading the sounds as well--using familiar (and phonetically spelled) words like 'banana', 'cat', and 'happy' make it easy for them to figure it out.

Variations

  • Sentences: For higher level students, give them words to remember and groups write sentences.

Suggested Topics

  • Fruit
  • Animals
  • Colors
  • The options are endless, especially if you are focusing only on letter recognition.
