Materials

  • Blackboard/White Board
  • Chalk/Dry Erase Markers

Directions

The traditional children's game but substituting a spider for a person to keep it from being too dark for younger students.

Choose a word and write blanks on the board, corresponding to the number of letters in the word. Students guess letters to spell the word. If the word includes that letter, write it in all of the appropriate blanks. If the letter is not included, draw a body part of a spider on the board. You can attach the spider to a line or still the fake gallows that are used in the traditional version (if you have the time and talent, draw a sleeping person underneath the image). If the spider is completed (i.e. body, head, 8 legs) before they figure out and spell the word, the students lose and you fill in the blanks for them. If this happens you can also do a 'punishment,' for example the class has to do the hokey pokey, sing the ABC's, or do some other silly, semi-embarrassing activity.

Variations

  • Teams: have the class split into teams and keep a separate spider for each of them. They all guess the same word, but get points for each letter they get right.
