GoLloyds

GoLloyds is a financial service that allows people to send money to their bank accounts back home with a single furikomi.

It is without a doubt the easiest remittance service to apply for and use, however GoLloyds users will incur a bigger fee per remittance than will XE Trade users. GoLloyds takes ¥2000 off the top of the amount of money you send so sending bigger chunks home less frequently will result in less fees.

Setting up GoLloyds

Required Documents

Signing up for GoLloyds is pretty basic. You need to mail them the following three items:

  • GoLloyds application form, which can be found here
  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of either your gaijin card or health insurance card

Note: Even if you fill out the application online, you will receive a PDF upon completing the online app which you will be required to print out and mail with your passport and gaijin/health card photocopy.

Process

The GoLloyds signup process is detailed (in English) on its official website.

Using GoLloyds

Once you have signed up for GoLloyds you will receive a letter in the mail detailing how to send money home. The most important information on this letter is the furikomi destination, which is where you will send the money from your local ATM.

Steps

  1. Check the daily exchange rates on GoLloyds's website. The current day's rates are posted around 10:00am.
  2. Go to your local ATM. You can do it from any branch of your bank, it does not need to be the branch where you signed up for your bank account.
  3. Begin the bank transfer process by selecting "furikomi" (振込) from the ATM menu. Know that if you initiate the furikomi after 3:00pm, it will be processed the next business day (and with that day's exchange rate). It's best to avoid the furikomi process on weekends and holidays as it is easier for things to go wrong.
  4. Input the information as found on the letter you received from GoLloyds. See Bank Transfer for more details.
  5. After completing this furikomi for the first time, some ATMs will ask you if you'd like a "furikomi card". Say "yes", because if you get this card you will be able to use it in the future to quicken this process. The furikomi card stores all info you just input so all you have to do is put in the amount of money you'd like to send.
  6. You're done! You should receive a thing in the mail from GoLloyds confirming the amount you sent (minus the ¥2000 that GoLloyds takes off the top) and at what exchange rate is was sent to your bank back home. The money should be available in your home bank within 24-36 business hours.
