Materials

Flashcards, flyswatters (optional)

Directions

First teach/review vocabulary (colors, animals, etc.). The first person to slap the card that the ALT says wins the card.

Variations

  • Big Karuta: Large flashcards are placed on the ground and students stand around the room, racing to be the first to reach the card.
  • Flyswatter: Cards are on the blackboard, students split into teams, one person from each team goes up to the board and hits the right card with a flyswatter.
  • Finger Karuta: Instead of cards spread out on the table, students point to pictures on a sheet
    • Twister: To keep higher level students from constantly winning, they must keep their finger on the cards they have already won
  • Run and touch: Cards are on the blackboard, students split into teams and stand away from the board. The ALT says the word and the first person of each team runs and touches the right card.
