Lesson Plan Outline: Introducing ‘What ___ do you like?’ (5th grade)

Greeting, Day, Date, and Weather

Warm-up

  • Criss Cross: asking ‘do you like ___?’
    • This will come in handy when starting the new grammar

Explain the Grammar

  • Write ‘do you like’ in white, reviewing its meaning
  • Before that, write ‘What’ in another color (leaving space between them)
  • In the space between, use another color to list categories like animal, color, fruit, and sport
  • Ask students what they think it means, then explain that ‘do you like’ means __が好きですか。 And ‘what __ do you like’ means どんな__が好きですか。
  • Explain that the answer is grammar they already know—‘I like __’

Practice Speaking

  • First review the categories—their meanings and pronunciation
  • Have students repeat the question after you, using different categories each time
  • Ask the teacher ‘What __ do you like?’ to show the students
  • Have them ask their partner two questions

Introductory Activities

  • Page 18 and 19 of Hi Friends 1: do a skit with the teacher, students match the shirt to the shape/color that is liked
  • Bingo: Students choose 16 things from fruits and animals (or the categories you choose), go one by one and ask them what fruit/animal they like. Student chooses one (it doesn’t have to be their favorite, just one from their card) and all other students who also have that on their Bingo card can circle it
    • To keep it fair, I tell them they can’t choose one that results in Bingo for themselves

Closing

  • Ask them to return the Bingo cards back to you or the teacher if they want to keep them
  • Bye-bye ~~

Lesson Plan Outline: Reviewing ‘Can you ○○?’ (6th grade)

Greeting, Day, Date, and Weather

Warm-up

  • Students get into teams of 5-7 people and take out paper and pencils
  • Plan questions reviewing grammar they have learned up till now (5th and some 6th grade)
    • (i.e. How are you, What day is it, Do you like cherries, What sport do you like, When is your birthday, etc.)
  • Write the answers on the board and ask students to try to read them, explaining each one afterwards
  • Ask them questions and they copy down the answer they think matches, getting points if they are correct
  • Tell them a different student must write the answer every time so that everyone practices writing

Review the Grammar

  • On the board, write ‘Can you ~’ to show them that they are reviewing it today
  • First ask the teacher ‘Can you play ○○?’ and they respond with the appropriate ‘Yes, I can’ or ‘No, I can’t’
  • Then ask students or have them ask each other

Review Activities

  • Teacher Interview:
    • Students re-form teams of 5-7 people
    • Teams janken and the winning team goes first (the order goes clockwise)
    • Teams ask the teachers ‘Can you ○○?’ and get 2 points for each Yes, 1 point for each So-so, and 0 points for each No.
    • Change the point system each round, e.g. No = 2 points or So-so = 2 points
    • If students don’t know the sport or game in English, they can say it in Japanese (e.g. Can you play ばばぬき)

Closing

  • Ask them to put their desks back
  • Bye-bye ~~
