The Mid-Year Seminar Planning Meeting is a meeting that is mandatory for all JET ALTs, typically held near the end of November.

Description

This meeting, sometimes referred to as the "meeting to plan the meeting", generally consists of two main parts and the contents change very little from year to year:

  1. An explanation of how the JET recontracting form is to be filled out
  2. ALTs, each placed in one of four groups, decide who will be the presenters and moderators at the mid-year seminar to be held in January. Usually 4 or 5 people will need to present/moderate. In general, junior high school ALTs must actively decide, however for high school ALTs the decision has generally already been made and so this portion of the meeting is kind of a moot point.

Presenters vs. Moderators

The main stated purpose of this planning meeting is to decide who will be in these roles.

For each presentation at the mid-year seminar, there are two presenters (one ALT, one JTE), and two moderators (one ALT, one JTE). There are usually 4 or 5 presentations at the seminar, and thus there will be 4-5 ALTs presenting and 4-5 ALTs moderating per group.

  • Presenters must give the actual presentation at the mid-year seminar alongside one of their JTEs. Presentations are to be about one of a few pre-selected topics. A fair amount of preparation will be required for those who are selected as presenters.
  • Moderators need only introduce the presenters and host the Q&A session after the presentation is completed -- no preparation is required.

When

A half-day (afternoon), typically in the middle of the last full week in November.

Location

  • Mie Prefectural Education Center in Tsu
Please refer to the its article for details about this location including directions.
This is not the same as the Mie Board of Education. For some reason a few ALTs each year are told by their supervisors that this event is held at the "Mie Board of Education", but this is incorrect information -- don't believe it.
