Materials
One blank piece of paper for each student, or a worksheet with a table (4 rows, 2 columns) and a Total box underneath
Directions
First review the numbers that will be used in the activity. Give each student a paper and tell them to choose and write down four from a set of numbers (e.g. 1-10). Then shuffle the number cards and draw one, or allow students to janken to draw the card and announce it to the class.
Any students with that number receive 20 fake dollars (or have them write it next to the number on their paper if you don't have fake money). Continue until four numbers have been drawn, with each card rewarding less money. For example, the first card is worth 20, the second worth 10, the third worth 5, and the fourth worth 1.
Be sure to tell them that the order that they wrote their chosen numbers down is irrelevant. To help clarify, write the drawn number on the board, an equal sign, and then the amount it is worth.
Variations
- Instead of numbers, have them choose vocabulary (they can draw pictures or write in Japanese but speak and listen in English)
- To make vocabulary more difficult, have them write the words they choose
- If you're using a large pool of vocabulary, let them choose 5 or more to increase their chances
