Chūbu International Airport

Chūbu International Airport (中部国際空港 chūbu kokusai kūkō), airport code NGO, goes by a variety of other names such Central Japan International Airport, Nagoya International Airport, and the local favorite nickname of Centrair (セントレア) as well; is a major airport just south of Nagoya that was constructed in 2005. It is on the direct opposite side of Ise Bay from Suzuka, and so access is fairly convenient from northern and central Mie.

It is Japan's third major international airport and given its recent construction it is a beautiful facility that without a doubt makes it one of the nicest airports in the entire world. It was constructed on a man-made island in Tokoname, off the coast of Aichi Prefecture.

How to get there

By Train

Rail is slightly more expensive than other options, however it is often the fastest, especially for anybody living north of Tsu. Train is also the option that runs the most frequently, with buses once every two hours and ferries once every one or two hours.

First, get yourself to Nagoya Station via either JR or Kintetsu. From Nagoya Station, take the Meitetsu in the direction of Chūbu Kokusai Kūkō. The limited express (特急 tokkyū) will get you from Nagoya to the airport in 35 minutes and costs ¥850.

Unlike Kintetsu, Meitetsu limited express trains often have fare-free cars, so you do not necessarily have to pay extra. However there is a special limited express train, called the "Myū Sky", which runs twice an hour and does require an extra fee of ¥350. It does the run between Nagoya and the airport in 28 minutes.

Facilities

The airport terminal is nice and shiny having only been made in 2005. It is a modern building and contains many modern facilities.

Though there are many things useful to travelers, not everything in the building is geared only at travelers. It's not unusual for people to go to Centrair to hang out because of a number of recreational facilities they have in place as well.

Most of Centrair's facilities on located outside the ticket gate to make them accessible to non-travelers as well.

  Stay overnight before or after your trip.

• Shops

  Just about everything you'd need at an airport, plus a few extra ones like a nice book store and a Hello Kitty super shop. Tons of omiyage shops as well.

• Restaurants

  A little pricey, but Centrair has a selection of almost every type of Japanese food you can imagine. All located up the central escalator in "Sky Town".

• Onsen

  Yes, even airports can have onsen. A great way to relax before getting on that long plane ride.

• Sky Deck

  Watch the planes taking off, and if it's clear out you'll get a great view of Mie from across the bay!

• Internet

  There are WiFi spots located throughout the building, particularly near the departure gates. If you aren't carrying a laptop, there are a few internet computers located in the arrivals hallway. ¥100 gets you 10 or 15 minutes.

• Suitcase Shipping

  One of Japan's best services. Send your suitcase to your apartment, hotel, or pretty much anywhere you want from the airport. For a standard large suitcase, fees will run about ¥1500 - ¥2000. Windows are located in the arrivals hallway.

• Money Exchange

  Convenient, but a little more expensive rates than what you'll find at banks.
