Jusco (ジャスコ) is a widespread chain of smaller-scale department stores found all over inaka Japan. They are owned by ÆON. They provide a wide selection of goods at a fairly inexpensive price in mid-sized and smaller cities/towns where it is unlikely that anywhere else in town will offer so many things all under one roof. Comparisons to Wal-Mart in the US have been made.
It is important to note that not all Juscos are created equally. Some act as anchors to full-size malls, others are tiny one-floor portions of fairly run-down shopping centers. Most of the ones in Mie, however, are standalone department stores that tend to be two stories, with a few of the biggest ones at three stories.
Contents
Shops
The average Jusco includes a number of sections. The core part is the grocery store which is likely to bear strong resemblence to a MaxValu supermarket (seeing as how both are owned by ÆON). In addition to a grocery store, some stores will have a bakery and maybe a few other food-related shops. Other standard sections include a vast women's clothing section, a kitchen shop, and children's area with toys and video games, a house section, a small electronics section, a cosmetics section, and lastly a small set of restaurants. Some Juscos will also have pseudo-independent shops (mostly clothing) lined up around the perimeter of the main floor area. Juscos also tend to sell a variety of massage machines, which your local old people will utilize to the fullest without an ounce of embarassment as you watch them and try to restrain laughter.
